What’s new in Australian Immigration law for 2019? – PART 3 (bring the parents)

Are you an Australian resident migrant who is missing your parents? Well, plans are in the pipeline to ease this pain (for a cost).

The Australian government is planning to introduce new 3 and 5 year visas that will allow parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to join their adult children here. According to the Department of Immigration, this new visa type is likely to be launched in July 2019.

There are some limitations (of course), which currently are suspected to include:

  1. This visa is only open to permanent residents or citizens of Australia. Anyone on a temporary visa is ineligible to apply for this.
  2. Only around 15,000 of this type of visa are likely to be granted in any one year.
  3. The cost of these visas is not insignificant, with the 3 and 5 year visas costing potentially around $5,000 and $10,000 respectively.
  4. The recipients of these visas will have to provide evidence of health insurance, so they are not a burden on the already strained public health services here in Australia.

As more information becomes available regarding this new visa we will endeavour to keep you updated. In the meantime if you have queries about visas in general that you would like answered, please do contact us and book an appointment with one of our highly qualified registered migration agents or lawyers.
