Parents can join their children in Australia, at a price

Are you missing mum’s cooking? Or perhaps dad’s DIY skills? Do your children miss their grandparents? There is a new visa in the offing which should help with these issues, but it does come at a cost.

As many as 15,000 people each year will be able to pay up to $20,000 to bring their parents to Australia for up to 10 years.

As with many visas, there are a few caveats that need to be considered when applying for this visa. The cost is high – with a 3 year visa being roughly $5,000 and a 5 year visa $10,000. There is the option to renew the visa once to a maxium of 10 years and there is no pathway to permanent residency after the visa has expired.

In addition the financial burden of healthcare for migrant parents will be shouldered by their children under the new visa, with sponsors legally required to pay for their private health insurance.

The children of the visa recipients will also need to act as financial guarantor on any extra healthcare costs their parents may be liable for in AustraliaT

Those on the new visa will not be allowed to work, however, the government hopes they will take on family roles which would see “reduced pressure on childcare facilities.”

Those sponsoring their parents for the new visa need to be Australian citizens or permanent residents, or “eligible New Zealand citizens”.
