So you’re heading to the UAE – maybe for a new job, to join your partner, or to start a fresh adventure in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Exciting times! But then someone mentions you need to get your documents “attested”, “legalised” or “authenticated” and suddenly it feels like you’re learning a whole new language, right?

What’s This Attestation Business All About?

The UAE authorities don’t just take your word for it when you rock up with an Australian birth certificate or university degree. They need proof that your documents are legitimate and authentic.

That’s where attestation comes in. It’s a chain of official stamps and signatures that verify your documents are authentic, starting from Australia and ending with the UAE MOFA giving it their final tick of approval.

Which Documents Usually Need Attesting?

The most common ones we help people with are:

Personal documents:

  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Death certificates (for inheritance or family matters)
  • Divorce decrees
  • Police clearance certificates (AFP checks)

Educational documents:

  • University degrees
  • TAFE certificates and diplomas
  • Academic transcripts
  • Trade qualifications

Professional documents:

  • Work experience letters
  • Professional registration certificates
  • Medical degrees and licenses (especially for doctors and nurses heading over)

Pretty much any official Australian document you’ll need to use in the UAE for visas, employment, residency, or official purposes needs to go through this process.

The Attestation Chain: Your Document’s Journey

Alright, here’s where your document goes on a bit of an adventure. There are typically three main stops:

Stop 1: Notary Public (That’s Us!)

First up, your document needs to be notarised by an Australian Notary Public. We verify that your document is genuine by sighting the original or verifying a high-quality scan with the relevant issuer, and then issue a notarial certificate with our notary seal and signature.

Here’s where we can make things really easy for you: we have access to national databases that let us verify certain documents electronically. This means for things like:

  • Passports
  • Driver licenses
  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • ImmiCards
  • Medicare cards

You can just send us a scanned copy, and we can verify it against the official government records. No need to post your precious original documents if they’re buried in a storage box back in Australia or if you want to keep them with you in the UAE. We verify them digitally and certify them for the attestation process.

For educational documents, we’ll need to contact the issuing institution to verify authenticity – universities, TAFE colleges, and professional bodies all have verification processes we work with regularly.

What you need to do: Send us scans or photos of your documents (we’ll tell you exactly what quality we need). For some documents, we’ll need the originals, but for many, digital verification means you can keep your originals safe with you.

DFAT

Stop 2: DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade)

Next, your notarised document heads to DFAT in Canberra for an authentication. DFAT verifies our notary signature and seal, then adds their own authentication certificate.

The authentication is DFAT saying “yes, this notary is legitimate and their signature is real.” It’s Australia’s official stamp on the document for international use.

Here’s where our location is golden: Our office is just down the road from DFAT. We take your documents over personally.

Stop 3: UAE Embassy in Canberra

The final stop is the UAE Embassy, also in Canberra. They verify DFAT’s authentication signature and add their legalisation, which is the UAE government’s official recognition of the document.

The Embassy and MOFA do not physically stamp your document.  They issue a digital certificate with a unique number that can be verified by anyone by logging into the verification service.  Once the digital certificate is issued, your document is fully attested and ready to use in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or anywhere in the UAE.

How Long Does All This Take?

Real talk time. The timeline can vary depending on a few factors:

Standard processing: Usually 7 to 10 days from start to finish

  • Notarisation: 1-2 days (once we have your documents)
  • DFAT: 1-2 business days
  • UAE Embassy: 5-8 business days

If you’re in a rush: We can sometimes expedite things. We’ve turned around urgent cases in under a week when people have tight visa deadlines.

The Process If You’re Already in the UAE

This happens all the time. Someone moves to Dubai, starts their job, and then realises “I need my documents attested for my spouse’s visa” or “my employer now needs my degree certificate attested for my work permit upgrade.”

No worries, we’ve got you covered:

  1. Courier your originals to us in Canberra or depending on the document, send us a scanned copy, and we can verify the details
  2. We handle everything from our end – notarisation, DFAT, UAE Embassy, the whole shebang.
  3. We courier the attested documents back to you in the UAE – usually takes 3-5 days via express courier.

We communicate throughout via email. You don’t need to be physically here in Australia for any

of it.

Why Our Location Makes All the Difference

We are just down the road from DFAT and the Embassies

What this means for you:

  • No postal delays between stages
  • Urgent applications get handled personally
  • Your documents aren’t floating around in the postal system

We’ve built relationships with the staff at both places over the years of doing this day in, day out. They know us, we know them, and that makes the whole process smoother for you.

The Cost Breakdown

I know you’re probably wondering about the damage to your wallet. Here’s roughly what to expect:

  • Notary fees: Varies by document type and number of documents
  • DFAT authentication: Around $102 per document (their fee, not ours)
  • UAE Embassy attestation: Around $140 per document + $70 per three documents for the Administration company that manages the process for the UAE Embassy
  • Courier costs: If you’re sending documents to/from the UAE, budget $90-150 each way, depending on service level

We’re always upfront about costs. No hidden fees, no surprises. We’ll give you a full quote before starting anything.

  2. We’ll give you a quote and timeline: We’ll tell you exactly what it’ll cost and how long it’ll take.
  3. Send us your documents: If you’re local, drop them off. If you’re interstate or overseas, courier them to us (we’ll give you our address and any special instructions).
  4. We handle everything: We’ll confirm when the document is going to DFAT for processing and when it has been completed by the Embassy.
  5. You get your attested documents: Either collect them from us or we’ll courier them wherever you need them.

The “What If” Questions

No problem. Keep our details handy. Lots of our clients come back when they need spouse visas sorted, or when they switch jobs and need documents for a new employer.

Embassy closures for holidays can throw a spanner in the works. We track these and will warn you if your timeline might be affected. We plan around Eid, UAE National Day, and other closures.

That’s literally what we’re here for. Send us photos or scans, and tell us what you need them for. We’ll advise you before you spend any money.
