Australia’s Refugee and Humanitarian visa program offers permanent protection to individuals and families who are unable to return to their home country due to serious risks such as persecution, human rights abuses, or discrimination.

If you are outside Australia and need protection, you may be eligible for one of the following:

  • Refugee visas (Subclass 200, 201, 203, 204)
  • Global Special Humanitarian visa (Subclass 202)

These visas can provide a pathway to safety, security, and a permanent life in Australia.

Refugee Visas (Subclass 200, 201, 203, 204)

These permanent visas are designed for people who are subject to persecution in their country of origin and are in urgent need of resettlement.

Key features:

  • Apply from outside Australia if you are at risk due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion or social group
  • You and your immediate family can live, work and study in Australia permanently
  • The Australian Government pays for your travel, medical checks and cultural orientation prior to arrival
  • No visa application charge from the Department of Home Affairs
  • Processing times can be lengthy — applications may take many months or even years

Global Special Humanitarian Visa (Subclass 202)

This visa is for people facing substantial discrimination or human rights violations and who have a proposer in Australia (an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible organisation).

Key features:

  • Must be outside Australia and outside your country of origin
  • Allows permanent residence for you and eligible family members
  • Travel costs are not covered by the Australian Government
  • Generally no visa application charge (some exceptions apply)
  • Processing times are similar to Refugee visas — long and complex
